To foil the Malters' ambush, find them and pair them up. To form a pair, you'll need to find two Malters of the same type. Start by detecting their presence around you using the Terrakourial's Premonition spell. Then reveal them with Amber Perception. Watch out for the Demonic Malter and any revealed Malters – they will attack you if you end your turn in their line of sight!
